Even though products containing asbestos have been completely banned in the UK since 1999, there are still thousands of residential and commercial buildings that contain asbestos products. Some of these products include cement roofing panels, asbestos wallboard, floor tiles, spraying coating, and reinforced PVC made from certain types of asbestos. If you are certified in asbestos removal, you should be able to find several opportunities in asbestos remediation.

Types of Asbestos

There are three main types of asbestos that were used in building materials within the United Kingdom: blue, white, and brown asbestos. Blue and white asbestos were banned in 1985, and all types were finally outlawed in 1999. However, it is estimated that over 50% of all buildings in the UK contain some type of asbestos.

White asbestos, which is also known as chrysotile, is the most commonly encountered type of asbestos, accounting for up to 90% of asbestos in most countries. It was used in building materials, automobile brake parts, and boiler seals. If remediation is done in an older home or commercial building, this is the type that is likely found.

Types of Asbestos

Blue asbestos, which is more formerly called crocidolite, may be the type of asbestos responsible for more deaths than any other asbestos. Not only are the fibres very thin, but they are difficult to see because they are translucent and have opaque qualities. This type of asbestos was also used in residential and commercial construction for many types of insulation, in electrical and telecommunications wiring, and for battery casings.

Exposure to amosite, or brown asbestos, often leads to a type of lung cancer called mesothelioma and another disease called asbestosis. It was often used in building materials due to its heat resistance and tensile strength. Some of the products containing brown asbestos include thermal, chemical, and electrical insulation, cement sheets, and tiles for roofs, floors, and ceilings.
